UP govt fined ₹10 lakh over e-waste on Ramganga river bank

  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday imposed a fine of ₹10 lakh on the Uttar Pradesh government as environment compensation for failing to take action to dispose of the e-waste on banks of Moradabad’s Ramganga river.
  • The green court also imposed an environment compensation of ₹50,000 on the Moradabad District Magistrate.

IWAI Signs Project Agreement With World Bank For Jal Marg Vikas Project

  • Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) signed a project agreement with the World Bank for Jal Marg Vikas Project on river Ganga.
  • The World Bank entered into a USD 375 million loan agreement with the Department of Economic Affairs, Union Ministry of Finance for Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP).
  • Jal Marg Vikas Project, which is expected to be completed by March 2023, is being implemented with the financial and technical support of the World Bank.

PM to lay foundation stone of temple in UAE

  • Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of a temple in Abu Dhabi during his visit to the United Arab Emirates.
  • The event will be part of a three-nation tour from February 9 to 12, starting in Palestine.
  • The UAE granted the temple project after India conveyed the demand of its nationals for a place of worship during Mr. Modi’s 2015 visit to the country.

Gobardhan Yojana launched to support farmers

  • Haryana launched the ‘Gobardhan Yojana’ to provide organic manure and cow urine with an aim to benefit farmers, CM Manohar Lal Khattar said.
  • A provision of Rs 11 crore has been made to provide benefits of various projects under this scheme.
  • The Yojana would help in doubling the income of farmers and next time, the MSP would be given with additional benefit of 50% over the cost of production.

Modi’s birth place to be a major tourist hub

  • With a ₹100 crore budget, Gujarat and the Centre are jointly developing the historical and ancient town of Vadnagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birth place, as a major tourist hub.
  • The projects cover Vadnagar’s famous Kirti Toran, Sharmishtha lake, Hatkeshwar Temple and archaeological sites.

India contributes $1 million to UN Development Partnership Fund

  • India contributed additional $1 million to India-UN Development Partnership Fund, earmarked for South-South cooperation.
  • The contribution aims to intensify its partnerships with other developing countries in the south.
  • India has pledged a multi-year contribution of $100 million to the fund establishment in June 2017.
  • The fund was set up on 9 June 2017 on occasion of the World Oceans Day as a partnership between India and United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.

Dubai named the world’s busiest International Airport

  • Dubai International Airport says it has held on to its No 1 ranking as the world’s busiest airport for international travel, after seeing some 88.2 million passengers in 2017.
  • Dubai International Airport first surpassed London Heathrow as the world’s busiest airport for international traffic in 2014. It has maintained the title ever since, with some 90 airlines flying into skyscraper-studded
  • Dubai, a gateway for East-West travel. The airport is home to the long-haul carrier Emirates.
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia remains the world’s busiest airport overall.

Singtel to invest over ₹2,600 crore in Airtel’s parent firm

  • Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) has said it will invest ₹2,649 crore in Airtel’s holding company Bharti Telecom.
  • With the investment, Singtel’s total stake in the firm will increase to 48.9% from 47.17% while Bharti Enterprises will continue to hold over 50% in Bharti Telecom.
  • Airtel said the fresh round of investment from Singtel highlights its confidence in the Indian telecom sector.

Higher fiscal deficit for FY’19: Goldman

  • The budgeted fiscal deficit is in line with expectations but there are some risks of slippage in financial year 2018-19.
  • Goldman estimates a 20 bps upside risk to the fiscal deficit in 2018-19, unless economic activities formalise at a rapid pace.
  • The government outlined a fiscal deficit target of 3.3 per cent of GDP in 2018-19 as against a revised estimate of 3.5 per cent in 2017-18.

Rs 51,600 crore released to states under MGNREGA in 2017-18: Government

  • The Centre has released more than Rs 51,600 crore to states under rural employment guarantee scheme MGNREGAtill January 31 in financial year 2017-18.
  • The central government is making funds available keeping in view the demand. The ministry has released Rs 51,616.99 crore as on January 31, 2018 to States/UTs for liquidating the pending liability of wage component and for running the programme during 2017-18.
  • In reply to another question, Ram Kripal Yadav informed the house that a sum of Rs 75.89 crore has been paid as compensation towards delay in the payment of wages under MGNREGA, so far.

Top Maldivian Judges Arrested After Emergency Declaration

  • The Maldivian police has arrested the country’s Chief Justice and another judge after the government of President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency.
  • Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed were arrested from the Supreme Court after an almost seven-hour siege of the premises by the security forces, reports the Maldives Independent.
  • Judicial administrator Hassan Saeed was also arrested after midnight and his residence was raided for the second time.
  • The reason for the judges’ arrest remains unknown. However, the Maldives Police Service has said that there was evidence that could implicate Saeed and Hameed.

Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant gets extension till June 30, 2019

  • Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant was on Monday given an extension till June 30 next year, according to an official order.
  • He was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of the government think tank on February 17, 2016 for a two-year term.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension of Kant’s tenure till June 30, 2019, the order issued by the personnel ministry said.

  • Shri A.K.Prasad has been appointed as new Financial Commissioner (Railways), Railway Board and ex-officio Secretary to Government of India vice Shri B.N.Mohapatra, who superannuated on 31st January, 2018.
  • Shri A.K.Prasad has since assumed charge as the new Financial Commissioner (Railways), with effect from 1st February 2018.

Jerome H Powell Sworn In As 16th Chairman of Federal Reserve

  • Jerome H Powell was sworn in as the 16th Chairman of the Federal Reserve for a four-year term. Mr Powell has succeeded Janet Yellen, the first woman to lead the US central bank in its 100-year history.
  • Powell was nominated for the post in November 2017 by President Donald Trump. The oath was administered by Vice Chairman Randal K. Quarles in the Board Room.

Former Australia bowler Doug Bollinger retires from cricket

  • Left-arm paceman Doug Bollinger has called time on a successful cricketing career in which he represented Australia across all three formats and developed into one of the game’s great characters.
  • He bagged 50 Test wickets at an average of 25.92, 62 ODI wickets at an average of 23.9 and nine T20 scalps at 27.66.

Manav Thakkar ends up with silver at WJC Finals

  • Indian paddler Manav Thakkar settled for silver after losing in the final of the 2018 ITTF World Junior Circuit Finals at Luxembourg.
  • The Indian failed to cash in on the close sixth game win as he ended with the junior boys silver medal on Sunday evening.
  • The No. 3 seeded Indian went down to top-seed Kanak Jha of the US 3-4 (11-9, 3-11, 11-9. 6-11, 3-11, 11-9, 6-11) in the see-saw final that saw the pendulum swing from one extreme to another.

Actor John Mahoney died on 77

  • Actor John Mahoney, who acted as the cranky, blue-collar dad in Frasier played counterpoint to pompous sons Frasier and Niles, has died at the age of 77.
